This week, I took part in a panel discussion for Open Access Week at the University of Auckland. I was asked to talk as I’ve been involved in setting up a journal called the Journal of Health Informatics in Developing Countries which was founded by my friend Muzaffar Malik when we were both lecturers at Otago University. The journal is both free to publish in and free to read so is very “open”. I’ve also been helping out with getting the Journal of Primary Health Care set up using the Open Journal System.

I enjoyed the discussion and think that Open Access is certainly how things will end up in the publishing world. I’m not sure what business models will evolve to support this, but I suspect that there will be a range of options employed by different journals according to their individual needs and requirements.

AMEE 2008

I will be at AMEE 2008 in Prague on Aug 30 – Sept 3. We’re doing a symposium on International Collaboration for medical e-learning.

I’ll be talking about e-learning in New Zealand, using 3D Anatomical models and, New Media Medicine, our online e-learning community of 40,000 students.

I presented via videoconference at MEFANET this week. We used a Polycom set-up in the University’s videoconferencing room. Connection worked pretty well with just a couple of minor microphone issues during the questions.

MedInfo in Brisbane was a great success. New Media Medicine was an exhibitor so I spend most of my time manning the stand rather than attending the lectures but I did manage to catch Muir Gray, Yunkap Kwankam, and others for the plenaries and I also attended some sessions on HL7 and e-learning.
